By the guidelines set forth by the AAP, we conduct a variety of screenings. These include, but are not limited to, photo vision screening, postpartum depression screening, and screenings for developmental issues, depression, and autism. We will bill your insurance for these additional screenings. However, please be aware that you will be responsible for these charges if your insurance does not cover these services.
Schedule of Visits
Congratulations! Your baby is finally here. Newborns are wonderful and they are a handful! Having family and friends as a support system can be extremely helpful. Make sure all visitors wash their hands well prior to being near your baby. Do not allow others to kiss your baby on the face and ask that if they are sick that they please visit another day. Your baby’s first visit to our office takes place during his or her first week of life, usually 1-2 days after you are discharged from the hospital.
This visit includes:
- Checking your baby’s weight and vitals
- Discussing your baby’s feedings
- Checking for jaundice
- Administration of Hepatitis B vaccine (if not done in hospital)
- Scheduling an appointment for a hearing screen (if failed in hospital)
- Addressing any questions or concerns you may have about your new baby.
Immunizations: Hepatitis B (if needed)
At the time of the 2-week visit, feedings, sleep and bowel habits are common discussions. It is not uncommon for your baby to lose weight right after birth, but by 2 weeks of age they usually have regained and are back to their birth weight. Always remember the safest sleeping position for your baby is on his or her back flat, and in a separate space without blankets, pillows or fluffy toys, to reduce the risk of SIDS.

- Discuss the use of Vitamin D supplements for your baby if you are breastfeeding.
- Screening mom for Post Postpartum Depression and providing resources if needed
- Sending your baby for their 2nd Newborn Screen

- Addressing any questions or concerns you may have about your baby.

At this visit we continue to track your baby’s growth along the growth chart, and we address any questions or concerns you may have. No immunizations are done at this time. Mom is screened for Postpartum Depression and is provided with resources if needed. Bright Futures Parent Info:
Your baby may be fussier at this age. Things like colic, gas or intolerance to their formula or breastmilk can all be contributing factors to fussiness and excessive crying. Be patient. Fussy babies eventually outgrow their crying phase. Keeping your baby safe is the most important thing.

Your baby is now more active, be careful to not leave your baby unattended, especially on a bed, couch or counter. Your baby should only be doing either breast feedings or formula feeds for until about 6 months of age. Your pediatrician will give you recommendations of when, what and how, to start introducing your baby to solids at this visit.

Your baby is most likely moving and doing a lot more now. You may notice that by now he or she starts to sit up on their own for short periods of time. Although exciting, it is not time to put your baby in a walker with wheels just yet. This can be dangerous or may delay the walking stage. Baby-proofing your home and moving the baby’s mattress in the crib to the lowest level possible is recommended by now.

Your baby may be even more mobile by now! You may notice him or she starting to crawl, pulling to stand and cruising on furniture. Babies will try to touch and get into everything so be patient!

Your baby may be starting to take a few steps without support by now or may even be walking. At this age it is also safe to transition your baby from breast milk or formula to cow’s milk. Babies need up to 16-20 ounces of milk, solid foods and about 2-3 snacks per day. Be careful to avoid small, hard foods that can cause choking. This is also the time to wean your baby off the bottle and give liquids in sippy cups. Weaning your baby from the bottle may also promote oral health by preventing cavities!
