Your child should receive routine well care visits as seen in the following intervals. Prior to each visit, select your child’s age group to see exactly what to expect on the day of your appointment. Keeping up with the well care visits schedule ensures you that your child is up to date with everything from screenings to immunizations to labs due for each visit.
Congratulations! Your baby is finally here. Newborns are wonderful and they are a handful! Having family and friends as a support system can be extremely helpful. Make sure all visitors wash their hands well prior to being near your baby. Do not allow others to kiss your baby on the face and ask that if they are sick that they please visit another day. Your baby’s first visit to our office takes place during his or her first week of life, usually 1-2 days after you are discharged from the hospital.

At the time of the 2-week visit, feedings, sleep and bowel habits are common discussions. It is not uncommon for your baby to lose weight right after birth, but by 2 weeks of age they usually have regained and are back to their birth weight. Always remember the safest sleeping position for your baby is on his or her back flat, and in a separate space without blankets, pillows or fluffy toys, to reduce the risk of SIDS.

Your baby may be fussier at this age. Things like colic, gas or intolerance to their formula or breastmilk can all be contributing factors to fussiness and excessive crying. Be patient. Fussy babies eventually outgrow their crying phase. Keeping your baby safe is the most important thing.

Your baby is now more active, be careful to not leave your baby unattended, especially on a bed, couch or counter. Your baby should only be doing either breast feedings or formula feeds for until about 6 months of age. Baby-proofing your home and moving the baby’s mattress in the crib to the lowest level possible is recommended by now.

Your baby may be starting to take a few steps without support by now or may even be walking. At this age it is also safe to transition your baby from breast milk or formula to cow’s milk. Babies need up to 16-20 ounces of milk, solid foods and about 2-3 snacks per day. Be careful to avoid small, hard foods that can cause choking. This is also the time to wean your baby off the bottle and give liquids in sippy cups. Weaning your baby from the bottle may also promote oral health by preventing cavities!
